Albert and Eleanor Leger started Eden Orchards and Eden Ice Cider Company in the winter of 2007. Located on what was an abandoned dairy farm in West Charleston, Vermont, the business currently consists of 800 apple trees and a small pressing operation and bonded winery in the basement of the rebuilt farmhouse. Albert is a Chemistry teacher and Eleanor recently left a corporate marketing job. He's French Canadian. She's a recovering flatlander who traces her family back seven generations in the Northeast Kingdom. Together, and with help from friends, family and a Quebec Ice Cider expert, they hope to make Ice Cider into another winning Vermont specialty product.
product description:Called “apple at its most refined,” Ice Cider is a sweet yet sophisticated dessert wine made from apples and concentrated by natural Northern winter cold. The drink, which is typically 9 – 11% alcohol by volume, was developed in Southern Quebec, Canada over the past 10 years - ‘Cidre de Glace’ in French. Eden Ice Cider Company is among the first producers licensed by the Federal government to make Ice Cider in the U.S. Our Ice Cider is made from a unique blend of 11 traditional and heirloom varieties of apples, including Roxbury Russet (discovered in Roxbury, MA in the mid-1600s), Northern Spy, MacIntosh, and Esopus Spitzenburg (grown by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello). 100% of the apples used are from Vermont orchards, including Champlain Orchards in Shoreham and Scott Farm in Dummerston; as well as our own Eden Orchards in West Charleston. It takes over 8 lbs. of apples to make one beautiful bottle!
